Tsavo

South-Eastern Kenya (Tsavo East & Tsavo West)

About Tsavo

Tsavo is vast. Tsavo East is known for endless plains, the Yatta Plateau, and “red elephants” dusted with laterite soil. Tsavo West is more varied: hills, lava flows, Mzima Springs’ crystal waters, and dramatic viewpoints.

Because of its size, Tsavo can feel quieter than the Mara — ideal for travellers who want space, big horizons and a classic wilderness safari. Wildlife includes elephant, lion, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and diverse birds; sightings depend on season and area.

Tsavo pairs well with Amboseli or a coastal extension for longer holidays.

Best time to visit

Dry seasons (June–October and January–February) generally improve road access and wildlife concentration near water. Green seasons offer lush scenery and fewer vehicles.
